In order to meet the needs of each and every child we work in line with the Earlyblue cat.JPG Years Foundation Stage. This is statutory framework introduced by the Government in 2008 and serves to outline best practice in care and learning for children aged 0-5 years. The EYFS places emphasis on a principled play-based approach to learning and development and recognises that it is through play that children develop intellectually, creatively, physically, socially and emotionally.

Child development is assessed through observations of children during their own self-chosen play, which allows carers to build an accurate picture of your child and guide him/her, indicating what can be done to support, extend and encourage learning further. Development records (Learning Journeys) are kept throughout your child’s entire time at nursery and parents are welcome to both view and contribute to them at any stage.

We appreciate that a rich and varied environment supports children’s learning and development. It gives them the confidence to explore and learn in secure and safe, yet challenging, indoor and outdoor spaces.

Each of our nurseries varies slightly but they are normally split into babies, toddlers and pre-school; each designed to provide a stimulating environment  which brings out the best in your child’s development.  The nursery setting enables children to socialise and learn through play at an early age and therefore you will find the following in all of our nurseries:-


  • Space is organised so that a wide range of activities is available at all times, incorporating both the child’s individual interests and learning goals.
  • Many of our resources are at child’s height to enable the children to choose what they would like to play with.
  • Children have access to the outdoors and this is seen as an extension of the indoor learning environment. In some cases this involves going for a walk into the local community etc
  • Practitioners provide a combination of adult focussed activities and child initiated experiences to enable children to explore the environment through play.

baby room 2.JPGOur baby rooms are designed to be warm and friendly with caring practitioners who ensure that each baby's individual needs are met. They are led by qualified and experienced practitioners who have a sound knowledge of child development and, in particular, 0-2 year olds. The rooms are bright and colourful and therefore provide stimulation, whilst separate sleep rooms allow for babies to enjoy peaceful surroundings.

We appreciate that young babies dictate their own routines and therefore staff ensure flexibility in order to meet these needs.

toddler 2.JPGWithin this room a more structured routine is introduced; however we continue to have a flexible approach to meet the needs of the individual child. Children are encouraged to explore and learn in a safe and stimulating environment and activities include a role play area, book corner, puzzles, construction, creative and much more!

Within the toddler room children begin to form early friendships and develop social skills with continued support from the key person. Some resources are at children’s level to allow them to make choices and develop early independence.

pre school 2.JPGThe pre-school room is zoned into areas which include a role play, messy area for arts and crafts, mark making, ICT/computer, book corner/quiet area, construction area and outdoors. Many of the resources are at children’s height enabling them to make their own choices. Children are encouraged to explore all areas of the pre-school environment, however we appreciate that some children prefer not to join in certain activities, therefore play is predominately led by the child and not the adult.

Within pre-school we continue to work around individual children’s interests; however nursery staff will also introduce a more structured routine which helps prepare children for school. Nursery practitioners work around ‘themes’, which are used to inform planning and therefore teach children about specific topics (e.g. seasons, celebrations and bringing stories to life!)
